In an effort to raise awareness about the resources on the medieval Black Sea that are available in print or online, our project is engaged in generating the following:
- Introductory bibliographies of primary sources and current literature;
- Guides to the medieval maps (“Medieval Maps of the Black Sea Region“) and coinages (“Black Sea Coinages in the Long Thirteenth Century“) of the region;
- A list of online platforms and research initiatives that investigate aspects of the field;
- Physical and virtual exhibitions and blogposts introducing aspects of the material culture of the region (“The Material Culture of the Medieval Black Sea“);
- A sample course syllabus on “The History and Culture of the Medieval Black Sea,” intended for use by instructors, that offers ways of organizing the disparate sources on the subject, highlights key texts and objects, and suggests questions and activities that may shape the class;
- A list of existing undergraduate and graduate courses taught locally and at partner institutions of relevance to the region;
- New courses to meet demand.
We welcome suggestions regarding relevant resources. The nature of the subject demands multiple fields of expertise and we cannot hope to do it justice without collaboration.
